It has been nearly three weeks since there were reports from New Delhi that the Congress high command had finalised the name of firebrand leader and Malkajgiri MP A Revanth Reddy as the new president of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) in place of N Uttam Kumar Reddy.
According to reports, former deputy chief minister Damodar Rajanarasimha, former minister Md Shabbir Ali and former MP Madhu Yashki would be appointed as the working presidents of the PCC.
The reports also said Uttam Kumar Reddy, Bhongir MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and PCC working president Ponnam Prabhakar would be elevated to the All-India Congress Committee as secretaries.
In fact, Revanth Reddy was summoned to New Delhi within a week of these reports surfacing in the media, which lent credence to the speculations.
A senior leader in the AICC also confirmed that AICC president Sonia Gandhi had approved Revanth Reddy’s name as the PCC chief.
One doesn’t know what has happened subsequently, but there has been no word from Delhi till now on Revanth’s appointment.
It appears a strong lobby of OBC leaders from Telangana including ex-MPs V Hanumanth Rao and Madhu Yashki prevailed upon the high command to put the PCC chief appointment on hold for some time.
Sources said they reportedly told the high command that Revanth’s appointment would trigger a massive unrest in the party and there was every possibility of the weaker sections being weaned away from the party.
They also brought to the notice of the high command how Revanth’s followers were making threatening calls to Hanumanth Rao for opposing the former’s candidature.
“There will be complete anarchy in the party if Revanth becomes the PCC chief as he has no regard for the seniors and backward classes,” they reportedly complained.
Perhaps, the high command is now in second thoughts over Revanth’s appointment!
