The decision of the Telangana government led by CM KCR to enact a legislation in the state assembly amending the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act, 1955, has drawn criticism from the BJP.
The Act is apparently being amended to remove the restrictions on two-children norm for the candidates contesting the elections to the GHMC.
The legislation to this effect is expected to be introduced in the emergency assembly session being convened by the government on Tuesday.
The hurried move by the government comes in the wake of the forthcoming elections to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to be held in November and December.
According to an official release from the chief minister’s office on Friday, the government has decided to conduct one-day session of the state legislative assembly on October 13 and that of state legislative council on October 14.
According to the GHMC Act, a candidate having more than two children shall be disqualified for contesting the election or for continuing as member.
Now, the government wants to remove this condition to enable those who have more than two children to contest the polls.
In fact, the TRS government removed this two-children norm in the elections to municipalities and municipal corporations last year. Since the GHMC has a separate Act of its own, the government is now proposing to amend the act to relax this rule.
Bharatiya Janata Party says this decision was being taken only to benefit the TRS alliance partner Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen headed by Asaduddin Owaisi.
Since majority of the MIM candidates have more than two children, the party wants this condition to be removed and KCR has obliged it, the BJP leaders are alleging.
