As expected, ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi on Monday registered a landslide victory in the MLC elections under local bodies’ quota by winning all the six seats, polling for which was held on December 10.
Out of the 12 MLC seats under local bodies’ quota, the TRS had already won six seats unanimously. Though the victory of the TRS in the remaining six seats was a foregone conclusion, elections had to be held for these seats because of presence of the independents in the contest.
The opposition parties – the Congress and the BJP extended support to independent candidates, not because they would win the seats but to prove a point that they would not allow the ruling party to walk away with win the unanimously, but to fight the elections.
The TRS leadership, despite knowing that it had enough numbers in the local bodies to win the seats, was apprehensive of a cross voting from the party members and so, it had to arrange camps for them in Bengaluru and Goa by spending lakhs of rupees. That itself is a victory for the opposition parties.
The TRS candidates who won the MLC elections are: T Bhanuprasad Rao and L Ramana from Karimnagar, Vanteru Yadava Reddy from Medak, Tata Madhu from Khammam, M C Kotireddy from Nalgonda and Dande Vittal from Adilabad.
While Bhanuprasad Rao and Ramana won 584 and 479 votes respectively, Yadava Reddy received 762 votes. MC Kotireddy secured 917 votes in Nalgonda, even as Madhu registered 480 votes in Khammam. In Adilabad, Dande Vittal received 740 of total 862 votes.
In Karimnagar, the BJP-backed independent candidate Sardar Ravinder Singh secured 232 votes, which is unexpected. Apparently, he polled a few votes belonging to the TRS.
Similarly, in Medak, Congress candidate Nirmala Jagga Reddy, wife of Sangareddy MLA T Jagga Reddy, secured 238 votes, though the Congress has only 230 votes in the local bodies.
This cross-voting, though of a small percentage, would be a worrisome factor for the TRS in the coming elections.
