Congress party MLA from Yellandu in Khammam district B Haripriya Naik, who recently defected to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi, had to face the people’s ire on Saturday for shifting her political loyalties.
Haripriya came to Govindra village of Kamepalli mandal in Khammam district to campaign for Telangana mandal parishad candidate Lakhavarthu Sunitha. Naturally, this made the villagers, mostly Congress party supporters, angry.
They greeted her with chappals and stones which they hurled at her convoy. The local Congress leaders angrily questioned her how dare she was to come to their village to campaign for the TRS candidate.
“We campaigned for Haripriya day and night and struggled a lot to get her elected as the Congress MLA. Yet, she ditched us and joined the TRS,” they complained.
While Haripriya managed to escape and leave the place in a huff, the TRS workers who accompanied her clashed with the Congress workers. They also hurled stones at the rival party activists. As the clashes took a serious turn, the police entered the scene and dispersed both the sides.
The police beefed up the security it the village. They shifted the injured party workers of both the Congress and the TRS to a hospital. They are trying to pacify the leaders to bring the situation under control.
