In any election, it is quite common for any political party to make an attempt to win and capture power. Even if the party knows well before the polling that it cannot win the election, it doesn’t admit the same openly but projects a positive picture.
But the Congress party in Telangana seems to have thrown up its hands and dropped the guard much before the polling in the upcoming elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
It was evident from the statement of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee working president and Malkajgiri A Revanth Reddy.
He gave enough hints that the TRS might capture the GHMC polls, but wanted that the opposition, too, should put up a tough fight.
“In any democracy, the presence of a strong opposition is essential. In the GHMC elections, the people may give 80 seats to the TRS and its friendly party MIM. But I request them give the opposition at least 70 seats, so that there will be tough opposition in the GHMC,” Revanth said, at the meet-the-press programme on Monday.
He admitted that there is virtually no opposition party in the state. There used to be a tough opposition during the regimes of N T Rama Rao and Marri Channa Reddy.
Even during the rule of Chandrababu Naidu, Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, the opposition was strong and it used to fight on the people’s issues, he recalled.
“Now, almost all the MLAs in Telangana are in the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi. Since there is no opposition, there is none to represent people’s issues inside and outside the assembly,” Revanth said.
The PCC working president appealed to the people of Hyderabad to elect 25-30 corporators of the Congress party in the GHMC elections.
“I will create wonders in the GHMC. Those who question the government should have place in the elected bodies. Otherwise, there will be no work for the media, no benefit to the people,” he asserted.
