Heavy rains that have been lashing the entire Telangana have played spoilsport with the grandiose plans of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party to kickstart their political campaign in a big way in the state ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
The Telangana Congress was planning to hold a massive rally of Priyanka Gandhi at Kollapur in Nagarkurnool district on July 30, where she was supposed to announce a Mahila Declaration of the party to appease womenfolk in the elections.
At the same meeting, former minister Jupalli Krishna Rao, along with several other senior leaders like Bharat Rashtra Samithi MLC K Damodar Reddy, his son Rajesh Reddy, Gadwal zilla parishad chairperson Saritha and others, was planning to join the Congress with a lot of fanfare.
The state Congress leadership was making massive arrangements for the Kollapur rally, but due to heavy rains across the state and flooding of Krishna river, the Congress high command asked the local leaders to postpone the rally, much to the disappointment of Jupally and others.
In fact, it is the second time that Priyanka Gandhi’s rally has been postponed. The rally was originally scheduled to be held on July 20, but then, too, it was deferred due to rains. Now, the Pradesh Congress Committee has proposed to hold the rally on August 5, provided there are no rains.
Similarly, the BJP, which was hoping to get back into action with the tour of Union home minister Amit Shah on July 29, was also disappointed with the postponement of his tour due to heavy rains.
Shah was to arrive on a day’s visit to interact with various sections of the party’s Telangana unit besides meeting several celebrities to seek their support. The Telangana BJP was also planning for bringing in several important leaders from various parties into the BJP.
With Shah deferring his plan, the state BJP leaders said they would work out some other date, once the rain fury subsides.
