After winning the recent assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh with a substantial majority, Telugu Desam Party president and chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has set his sights on capturing power in Telangana as well, if not immediately, then in the future.
The TDP did not contest last year’s assembly elections or the recent Lok Sabha elections in Telangana, as the party had virtually become inactive.
Moreover, Naidu's primary focus was on regaining power in Andhra Pradesh, and he did not want to expend his resources and energies on Telangana.
However, now that Naidu has secured victory in Andhra, he has shifted his focus back to Telangana, aiming to take advantage of the weakened position of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and the BJP's inability to emerge as a dominant force.
On Saturday, Naidu visited Hyderabad and held a comprehensive meeting with Telangana TDP leaders and cadre.
"I am confident that the TDP will come to power in Telangana as well in the future. We must keep that objective in mind," he said during the meeting.
He stated that he would focus on rebuilding the party organization in Telangana from the village level up to the state level, giving due importance to youth and backward classes.
Within the next 15 days, Naidu said, he would launch a membership enrollment drive in the state. Following the completion of the membership drive, a new president for Telangana TDP would be appointed, he added.
During the meeting, the chief minister decided to dissolve all the old committees of the Telangana TDP, including those for parliamentary and assembly constituencies.
"The new committees for the party will be appointed for both Andhra and Telangana simultaneously," he said.
