N Convention, an illegal structure: HYDRAA chief

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) of the Telangana government strongly refuted senior actor Akkineni Nagarjuna's claim that the N Convention Centre in Madhapur was completely legal and that its demolition was unlawful.

HYDRAA commissioner A V Ranganath issued a statement saying that the convention centre was indeed illegal and had not obtained any building permissions from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

He stated that N-Convention was among many other encroachments in the Full Tank Level (FTL) and buffer zone of Tammidikunta Cheruvu that were removed by HYDRAA, in collaboration with the GHMC, town planning, irrigation, and revenue departments.

He further explained that the N Convention Centre had been clearly manipulating systems and processes to continue its commercial activities through unauthorized structures built in the FTL and buffer zones of the lake.

“It has encroached on 1.12 acres in the FTL and 2.18 acres in the buffer zone,” he said.

Ranganath also pointed out that the builders of N-Convention had not obtained any building permissions from the GHMC. Later, they attempted to regularize the unauthorized structures under the Building Regularization Scheme (BRS), but this was rejected by the concerned authorities.

He mentioned that due to unchecked encroachments in and around Tammidikunta Cheruvu and the connecting nalas, the areas around Madhapur and Hi-Tech City are facing serious waterlogging issues. The lower reaches of Tammidikunta Cheruvu are regularly inundated during heavy rains as the lake's capacity to hold water has shrunk by more than 50-60%.

“Many houses belonging to lower and middle-class people are getting submerged in these lower reaches, resulting in severe property loss for them,” he said.
