The heavy rains that have wreaked havoc in Hyderabad throwing the normal life out of gear for the last two weeks has caused immense damage to the reputation of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi government.
As the government itself has admitted, the heavy rains and flash floods have left a trail of heavy destruction in the city.
Hundreds of colonies have been submerged in water, roads have been completely ravaged, properties worth hundreds of crores have been damaged and more than 50 people died.
Initially, the TRS government did not take it seriously as it might have thought the rains could last a couple of days. But as the days progressed, it could understand the magnitude of the damage.
It was only after the city faced considerable damage and the people started taking the officials to task, the TRS government woke up from slumber.
While KCR continued to remain indoors of his Pragati Bhavan or the Erravelli farm house, his son K T Rama Rao has started touring areas to interact with the people to undo the damage to the government to some extent.
TRS’s political ally, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen led by Asaduddin Owaisi also has started feeling the heat, as the people in the old city of Hyderabad, which was the worst effected due to floods, have been blaming the politicians.
According to sources, the TRS leadership has realized that it may not be ideal to conduct the elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation under these circumstances, as the party might face a severe political backlash.
As announced by state election commissioner K Parthasarathy, the GHMC elections are scheduled to be held in the last week of November or the first week of December. It means, the schedule would have to be announced by first week of November.
However, the TRS government recently amended the GHMC Act stating that the SEC cannot conduct the polls without consulting the state government. So, it unlikely that KCR will go in for elections at least in the near future, sources said.
