KCR To Drop Double-Bedroom Scheme?

KCR To Drop Double-Bedroom Scheme?

If reports doing rounds in a section of media are to be believed, Telangana Rashtra Samithi president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is likely to do away with the double-bedroom scheme in a gradual manner.

According to these reports, KCR is contemplating modifying the scheme. Instead of the government itself taking up the construction of double bedroom houses, it might come up with a cash transfer scheme to the beneficiaries so that they would construct the houses according to their requirement.

It would mean, the government would fix certain amount – it could be Rs 5 lakh or Rs 6 lakh for each house and transfer the same into the account of the beneficiary. The onus of identifying the piece of land and construction of house depends on the beneficiary.

Sources said it was nothing but an old scheme, which was implemented with the help of the Central government.

“What the KCR government wants to do now is to give additional grant from the state along with the central grant and give it to the beneficiary to construct the house,” sources said.

Apparently, the housing department authorities have thrown up their hands in the construction of double bedroom houses. Out of around three lakh houses, only a few thousands of houses were constructed completely and others were in various stages.

There have been reports about poor quality of double bedroom houses everywhere as contractors used substandard material. Lack of sand and high prices of steel and cement have also become major issues for the government. Hence, KCR decided to opt out of the scheme, sources said.
