The Telangana government led by CM KCR, which has been facing allegations of utter negligence in coming to the rescue of the people affected by heavy rains and flash floods in Hyderabad for the last one week, has finally woken up.
Last week, when several parts of the city were submerged in flood waters, KCR announced release of Rs 5 crore for flood relief works in the city.
Even the death toll in Hyderabad was under reported – while more than 25 people died in a single day, the KCR government put the figure at 11.
Being the chief minister, KCR did not even do an aerial survey of the rain-hit areas of at least Hyderabad, if not entire Telangana.
His son, municipal administration minister K T Rama Rao visited a few areas to distribute relief material, but not the really-affected areas.
On Monday, Tamil Nadu government led by E Palani Swamy announced a cash assistance of Rs 10 crore for flood-hit people of Hyderabad. It was only then that the state government realised that it was getting backlash from people.
KCR quickly held a review meeting and announced that the government was releasing Rs 550 crore immediately to the Municipal Administration Department to take up flood relief works in the city.
He also announced that the government would extend Rs 10,000 as an immediate relief to each household which was affected by the flood. This financial help will be distributed from Tuesday morning itself.
All the houses which were totally damaged in the rains and floods would be given an assistance of Rs one Lakh each and partially damaged would be given Rs 50,000 each.
The CM instructed the officials to repair and restore all the roads and other infrastructure facilities on a war footing and ensure that the life comes back to normalcy at the earliest.
