The confrontation between YSR Telangana Party president Y S Sharmila and the Hyderabad police at her Lotus Pond residence was the talk of the town in Telangana on Monday.
Sharmila was arrested when she tried to lay siege to the office of Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged leak of questions for recruitment exams conducted by the Telangana Public Service Commission (TSPSC).
She created a big scene on the road after manhandling some police personnel, besides slapping a woman constable.
She squatted on the road and shouted at the police, before being arrested and taken to the police station.
A video of Sharmila making derogatory comments against the police and their sharp retort has gone viral on the social media. She wondered whether the police had no other work except preventing her from protesting.
“Don’t you have any work? Go and supervise the donkeys,” Sharmila shouted at the cops. One of them gave a sharp reply: “That is what we are doing now,” indicating that she is a donkey.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad police officers’ association president Valla Shankar Reddy strongly condemned the manhandling of the police by Sharmila and her mother Y S Vijayamma.
“The way Vijayamma and Sharmila behaved with the police, abused them and manhandled them was quite atrocious. The police were only fulfilling their responsibility of protecting the law and order,” he said.
Reddy said such attitude toward the police would hurt the self-respect of the police officials.
“They should introspect on their behaviour and apologise to the police department. They should not test the patience of the police,” the association leader said.
