The Telangana High Court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence awarded by the Special Court for NIA cases to five of the six accused in the 2013 Dilsukhnagar bomb blasts case.
A division bench comprising Justice Lakshman and Justice Sree Sudha confirmed the capital punishment, dismissing the appeals filed by the convicts against the NIA court’s verdict.
The High Court conducted an extensive hearing over approximately 45 days before delivering its judgment, fully supporting the 2016 ruling of the NIA Special Court, which had sentenced the five individuals to death.
The convicts in this high-profile case are Asadullah Akhtar from Uttar Pradesh (A-2), Zia-ur-Rehman, a Pakistani national (A-3), Mohammed Tahseen Akhtar Hasan from Bihar (A-4), Mohammed Yasin Bhatkal (A-5), and Ajaz Sheikh Samar Arman from Maharashtra (A-6).
These individuals were found guilty of orchestrating the deadly twin bomb blasts in Hyderabad’s Dilsukhnagar area in February 2013. The explosions claimed 18 lives and injured over 130 people.
The accused had approached the High Court challenging the NIA court’s decision, but their appeals were dismissed, and their convictions upheld.
Notably, Riyaz Bhatkal, the alleged mastermind behind the attack, remains absconding.
