The Union government had brushed aside the arguments of the Telangana state government on the backwaters of the prestigious Polavaram Project.
The Central government held a virtual meeting with the represnetatives of the four states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Chhattisgarh on Thursday.
Polavaram Project Authority chairman R K Gupta and the senior officials of the Jal Shakti Ministry were present virtually.
The Central government said that there was no threat for Bhradrachalam from the backwaters of the project, as feared by the Telangana state.
The Centre told the Telangana representatives that two rounds of surveys were conducted on the backwater threat to the states of Telangana, Odisha and Chhattisgarh in the past.
The Andhra Pradesh officials told the meeting that they have constructed spillway to take 50 lakh cusecs of flood water and that would not submerge Bhadrachalam or any part of Telangana state.
The Central government had conducted surveys in 2009 and 2011 on the backwater issues in the states of Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
The survey reports have made some recommendations based on which the final designs of the project were cleared, the Centre told the states.
Andhra Pradesh had committed that it would go by the directions of the Central government on the project and would not deviate.
