H-1B Spouses In Trouble With New Resolution

H-1B Spouses In Trouble With New Resolution

Two Republican Senators, John Kennedy and Rick Scott, have introduced a resolution to overturn a rule from President Biden’s administration that extended the automatic renewal period for work permits from 180 days (6 months) to 540 days (about 1.5 years).

This rule, affects thousands of immigrants, including the green card applicants, refugees, and notably, spouses of H-1B and L-1 visa holders—many of whom are Indian professionals in the U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) implemented this rule in Biden's regime to address long delays in processing work permit renewals, ensuring workers don’t lose jobs due to bureaucratic backlogs.

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas defended the Biden government's move, stating it helps businesses fill jobs in a growing economy.

However, the Senators argue that the extension weakens immigration enforcement, making it harder to track individuals working illegally.

This is part of a broader Republican push to reverse Biden’s immigration policies, which they believe undermine border security and job protections for Americans.
