The YSR Congress Party has changed its strategy on the issue of resignations from the Assembly.
It has now decided not to press for acceptance of the resignations of all its 17 legislators. This is being done to ensure that the resolution on Telangana state formation, whenever it comes to the Assembly can be defeated on the floor of the House.
By this move, the party will also avoid criticism that it was indirectly helping the division of the state by exiting the from the Assembly. Once the resignations are accepted by the Speaker, the effective strength of the House will come down and as a result the Telangana resolution could be passed.
The decision not to press for acceptance of the resignatiived on of MLAs was taken at a meeting chaired by the party President Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday. The MLAs had submitted their resignations to Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar sometime back anticipating CWC decision in support of bifurcation of the state.
After prolonged deliberations, the MLAs decided not to press for acceptance of their resignations and instead request the Speaker to convene the State Assembly to pass a resolution in support of a united state. The MLAs have an appointment with the Speaker later in the evening.
The YSR Congress legislators also planned to go in a delegation along with Jagan to call on the Governor E S L Narasimhan and urge him to convene the Assembly to facilitate the passing of a resolution for Samaikyandhra. They had sought an appointment with the Governor for this purpose and expected to meet him sometime later in the evening.
The MLAs are also planning to address a letter to the Chief Minister for convening the Assembly and move a resolution favouring a united state and send the same to the centre.
Later speaking to the media, Shobha Nagi Reddy, on behalf of the YSR Congress legislators, took pot shots at Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCC President Botcha Satyanarayana in playing with the sentiments of the people and misleading them by proclaiming that they stood for a united state.
“If the Chief Minister is really stood for Samaikyandhra, he should convene the Assembly and get a resolution passed before the Centre sends a resolution for formation of a Telangana state”, she observed.
