The total debts of United Andhra Pradesh have finally been divided by the Centre between AP and Telangana.
According to this, the debt of Andhra Pradesh stands at Rs 86,348 crore and that of Telangana at Rs 67,711 crore. Both AP and Telangana are supposedly comfortable with this division and a further Rs 18436 crore is to be divided still.
The division was made in the ratio of 52:48 on the basis of population. One fails to understand why AP has not expressed its opposition to this division.
Hyderabad used to generate 55% of the revenue of Undivided Andhra Pradesh and that has been completely given over to Telangana which didn’t do a thing to put Hyderabad on the world map. When you divide the debt, you also have to consider the revenue streams available to both the States.
Andhra Pradesh is starting from scratch whereas Telanganites have got hold of Hyderabad. Therefore, it is clearly Telangana that has to shoulder the major portion of the debt. Greater population does not mean a thing! It is like a thousand people with bows and arrows taking on a hundred people armed with machine guns. That is the difference, Hyderabad makes! This is yet another division, the TDP shouldn’t have agreed to.
