Ever since YSR Congress party government headed by chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has decided to shift the executive capital from Amaravati to Visakhapatnam, there have been various speculations about what would happen to Amaravati.
Especially, about the fate existing Secretariat at Velagapudi, there were several theories doing rounds in the mainstream and social media.
There was a talk that the present Secretariat would be handed over the Acharya Nagarjuna University which is presently located closer to Guntur town.
The various blocks of the Secretariat would be converted into various departments. If necessary, permissions would be given to increase the number of floors in each building and the existing campus could be expanded to more area to accommodate more buildings.
The present assembly complex could be used as University auditorium and other cultural centres of the university.
The MLA quarters and All India Services Officers’ quarters could be completed and given to the university employees.
The present judges’ quarters and ministers’ quarters under construction could be converted into Vice Chancellors’ bungalows and guest houses.
What will happen to the existing Nagarjuna University? The government can take it over and use it for other purposes.
Jagan declared that the legislative capital would continue at Amaravati, but he did not specifically say whether the assembly would continue in the existing complex.
In the name of security, he might move it closer to the highway by constructing a new assembly complex.
Now the latest talk is that the Jagan government might convert the existing Secretariat and Assembly complexes into an ultra-modern government hospital with state-of-the-art equipment.
Apparently, Jagan wants to convert Amaravati into a health city with affordable healthcare to the poor people.
Not a bad idea!
