Continuing its winning streak in elections, the ruling TRS in Telangana swept gram panchayat polls with a thumping majority.
TRS bagged majority of the gram panchayats in the first phase even before the polling was conducted and counting was held.
The first phase of elections for gram panchayats were held today (Monday). Elections in first phase were supposed to be held for 4,479 panchayats. But 769 panchayats were declared elected unanimously. Of this TRS bagged 610 panchayats.
The elections were held for remaining 3,710 panchayats today (Friday) from 7 am to 1 pm. The counting of votes started at 2 pm. The latest trends indicate clean sweep by TRS.
The TRS candidates are leading in over 3,000 panchayats.
Though gram panchayat elections are not held on the symbols of political parties, the candidates contesting elections are backed by political parties.
The final results are expected by 9 pm on Friday.
