Thank you, Supreme Court!

In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court has ruled that there could be no quota for the SC and ST employees for top posts in public sector banks.

However, the Court said that reservation for the SC/ST’s was possible from scale-1 till scale 6.

Banking is such an integral and key part of our economy and it sends a chill down my spine to think of some Tom, Dick or Harry waltzing into the executive office of a top public sector bank (just because he hails from a particularly depressed community, not because he is qualified) and then take some stupid decision that will herald in another recession.

With all due respect, ‘reservations’ have far outlived their purpose and have absolutely no place in a nation that has embraced capitalist change.

Replacing the present system with meritocracy is the need of the hour! At the same time, a system needs to be chalked out where opportunities are available to all but only the fittest will occupy positions of responsibility.

Looking at it from another angle, ‘reservations’ are needed at the bottom of the ladder but not to get to the top of the ladder.
