Telangana: Mulayam's party to back no-trust motion

The Samajwadi Party of Mulayam Singh Yadav has said it will support a no confidence motion proposed by Andhra Pradesh members against the government over the creation of Telangana.

Sources say the Samajwadi party, which offers external support to the ruling UPA, is upset with that the government tabled the anti-corruption Lokpal Bill without consulting it. The party says it strongly opposes the Bill.

Six Congress MPs and four TDP MPs had on Monday written to Lok Sabha speaker, Meira Kumar, seeking a no-confidence vote for "the union council of ministers" which last week said that the new Telangana state will have 10 districts.

Any move to bring a no-confidence motion requires the support of about 50 MPs or roughly 10% of the Lok Sabha.

The Samajwadi Party, which has 21 MPs in the Lok Sabha, is reportedly trying to get other MPs on board with its plan to oppose the government.

The Congress law-makers had wanted to embarrass the party over its decision to split Andhra Pradesh and carve out the region of Telangana as India's 29th state. But now, the government's ally Samajwadi Party has also joined them.
