The YCP, which suffered a massive defeat in the 2024 elections, found itself significantly weakened in the East and West Godavari districts.
Until recently, its cadre and party members were in a state of hibernation. However, the aggressive tactics employed by the TDP in the region have unexpectedly reignited YCP’s base.
The desperation displayed by TDP over municipal vice-chairman positions is alarming.
In an attempt to seize control, TDP workers have resorted to extreme measures, creating chaos to the point where female YCP members are fleeing in fear—videos of which have gone viral.
TDP, as part of the ruling alliance with an overwhelming majority of MLAs, already governs the state. Yet, their undue obsession with securing local municipal seats through intimidation raises serious questions.
Reports indicate that houses of those unwilling to bow to TDP’s demands are being demolished under questionable justifications. However, those who comply and vote in their favor remain untouched. This kind of political tyranny undermines democratic principles.
Ironically, TDP’s aggressive actions have only managed to wake up a dormant YCP. Stirring a weakened opponent back into action is a strategic blunder.
If this trend continues, the ruling alliance, with its legislative majority, might as well push for a law allowing the state government to nominate all municipal positions without elections.
If they are willing to resort to anti-democratic tactics, making municipal posts purely appointed would align with their hunger for control.
No political hooliganism lasts forever. People ultimately reject violence. The case of Raghu Rama Raju’s assault once appeared as an act of heroism by the then-ruling party, yet it was the people who decisively defeated them at the ballot box. Voters may remain silent, but they speak loudly during elections.
If TDP leaders like Nara Lokesh continue on this reckless path, they may meet the same fate in 2029 that YCP suffered in 2024. Overconfidence and missteps often lead to downfall.
