TDP extends unsolicited support to BJP in Prez polls

The Telugu Desam Party led by former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday decided to extend ‘unsolicited’ support to Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate and tribal leader Droupathi Murmu for the post of the President of India.

Though the BJP has not approached the TDP for any support, Naidu decided that the party would extend support to the candidature of Murmu in the interest of the party.

Maybe, he thought it would help him get into the good books of the BJP leadership and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Naidu made this announcement after the party’s strategy committee meeting held in Amaravati.

Stating that the TDP is always committed for social justice, Naidu said the party decided to back the tribal woman leader for the top post in the country for the same reason.

Recalling that the TDP had earlier too supported the candidatures of K R Narayanan and APJ Abdul Kalam for the post of President of India, Naidu said these were the classic examples of the party's commitment for social justice.

The TDP was behind a Dalit leader GMC Balayogi becoming the Lok Sabha Speaker and a Dalit woman leader Prathibha Bharathi as Speaker of the assembly, Naidu said adding that OBC leader Kinjarapu Yerran Naidu had become the Union Minister only with the party's support.

Similarly, beyond political considerations, the TDP wholeheartedly extended support to son of the soil PV Narasimha Rao at Nandyal to ensure that he became the Prime Minister of India.

“Thus, the TDP is always stood by the Telugu people and committed for social justice,” Naidu said.
