'Attempt to commit Suicide' is a crime punishable with one year in prison, a fine or both according to IPC 309.
However, this law is all set to be repealed soon and since this comes under ‘law and order’ which is a ‘State’ subject, consensus is being evolved among the various states before the Bill is presented in Parliament.
The new law recognizes that the attempt to commit suicide is more a diseased state of the mind for which a cure and care should be provided rather than punishment.
Certain States like Bihar and Sikkim have expressed concerns against the new law facilitating terrorists and suicide bombers. However, the Union Ministry is believed to have reassured the States that other more stringent laws will automatically come into play in the case of anti-social elements.
It is high time that such antiquated laws are amended!
