Rs 1,000 Crore Cyclone Relief Just Peanuts

The announcement of Rs 1,000 crore by Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards cyclone relief in Visakhapatnam and other north-coastal districts was just peanuts, as the loss was colossal.

This was the view expressed by actor-turned-Congress MP Dr K Chiranjeevi who announced allocation of Rs 50 lakh from his MPLADS fund towards “Hudhud” cyclone Relief Fund on Wednesday.

He said the government estimates alone indicated that the loss could be more than Rs 70,000 crore.

Expressing concern over the cyclone effect which devastated three coastal districts, Chiranjeevi urged the Centre to consider Hudhud as a national calamity and give adequate financial succor.

Chiranjeevi expressed surprise over the announcement of Rs 1,000-crore financial assistance to AP Government to take up relief measures.

He appealed to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who sought Rs 2,000 crore from the Centre, should exert pressure to get adequate financial aid, he said.

He said though human loss was less, Hudhud caused colossal loss of assets beyond estimation. There is a need for scientific approach to estimate actual loss of assets, he said.

He also said his fans swung into action by distributing water, food and biscuits among the victims.

Chiranjeevi appealed to Mega fans to participate voluntarily in relief and rescue measures till normalcy restored.
