Petrol and diesel in GST: No benefit to common man

Petrol and diesel in GST: No benefit to common man

If you are one of those who think that bringing petrol and diesel prices under the ambit of GST will drastically reduce their prices and make life easier for the common man, think again!

First of all, there is no plan to bring  petrol and diesel under the auspices of GST for the next few months and even if the Centre does this, the State governments will be given permission to levy additional taxes to make up for the revenue deficit which means prices will more or less remain the same. Thus, there will be no benefit to the common man.

The above acts were revealed by Sushil Kumar Modi, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar. Brining petrol and diesel under GST will definitely make life easier for the common man but not for the politicians who gorge on taxpayers’ money.

Down South, there is not one single Chief Minister who will pass on the benefits to the people by not levying additional taxes.

Currently, the Centre charges around Rs 20 and Rs 16 approximately on one litre of petrol and diesel respectively. On top of this, there is VAT levied by States.

Andaman and Nicobar has the lowest VAT at 6 percent on both petrol and diesel. Mumbai has highest VAT of 40 percent on petrol and Telangana has highest VAT of 26 percent on diesel.
