Actor’s Party Unlikely To Get Registered With Election Commission Before Polls
Hyderabad: Mercurial Pawan Kalyan’s decision to jump onto the political bandwagon in haste has resulted in problems for his party. It’s too late to get his outfit, which he has named Jana Sena Party, to get registered with the Election Commission of India (EC).
Pawan Kalyan seems to be ignorant of the fact that the procedure to register a political party takes at least three to four months.
With Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state just less than two months away, his party may remain stillborn.
The election notification for Telangana will be issued on April 2 and for Seemandhra on April 12. Elections in Telangana will be held on April 30 and in Seemandhra, on May 7.
EC sources told TOI that there was no outfit with the name Jana Sena Party registered with the poll body. Official sources, however, said an application had been made for registration of the party on March 10.
But merely submitting an application does not mean that the party is registered as there are other procedures to be followed. In addition, a month’s notice for registration of a new political party is to be issued in a newspaper. This, in effect, means Pawan Kalyan’s proposed party cannot get a new name from the EC.
Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and former chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy did not have to go through this lengthy process since YSR Congress Party and Jai Samaikhyandhra Party were registered with the Election Commission before they launched their parties. All that they did was to borrow the tittles. But Pawan has no such luck as his party title, Jana Sena Party, is not yet registered with the EC.
On Wednesday, Pawan Kalyan went public with his party’s name with a new Facebook page. “This is the official page of Jana Sena Political Party owned by renowned actor from Tollywood - Pawan Kalyan,” the ‘About’ info on the page said describing the party as a political organisation. A technicolour picture of an angry Pawan Kalyan stares at viewers and a folded fist with the description “Pawanism4change” also appears on the page. By afternoon the page got more than 10,000 likes. “Leadership is action, Not a position,” his page reads which also has the hashtag JanaSena4Change.
The 44-year-old actor has made arrangements to go live on March 14 at 6.30 pm from Hitex at Madhapur in Hyderabad. His 45-minute speech, it is said, will be telecast live and also webcast.
Pawan Kalyan reportedly fell out with his elder brother and Union minister of state for tourism Chiranjeevi, after the latter merged his Praja Rajyam Party with the Congress. But while Pawan Kalyan’s coterie and some die-hard fans seem to be excited about the actor’s political entry, the Telugu film industry has largely been lukewarm to the idea and some have even gone to the extent of openly suggesting that he stay away from politics.
