The Chairman of Infosys, Narayana Murthy once said, “There is a tendency on the part of those in power to behave like the British who ruled India. The white face has been replaced with a brown one but the mentality continues to be the same.”
Indian rulers time and again go out of their way to be in the good books of foreign nations, but turn a blind eye to the sufferings and problems of their own countrymen.
Modi became the first ever Indian Prime Minister to visit Mongolia and during his visit announced a credit of Rs $ 1 billion to Mongolia for developmental works. One billion dollars? This shows two things here.
First, it is an indication of India’s robust fiscal health and second, it shows that the government is clearly more concerned about international perception rather than that of the people back home.
When Nepal was rocked by the earthquake, the government responded with amazing alacrity in providing relief to that country. But when Hudhud rocks Vizag, Modi announces a thousand crore and sends only 40% of that amount.
Similarly, the BJP cites the 14th Finance Commission and other technicalities to deny the promised special status to AP. But obviously there are no such technical problems in giving 1 billion dollars to Mongolia.
The goodwill of foreigners is more important than that of fellow Indians. When will these mindsets change?
