At a time when the entire country is hailing in one voice the verdict given by the Supreme Court awarding death sentence to the four accused in the sensational Nirbhaya rape case of December 2012, here is one person who has opposed the death sentence.
She is Manchu Lakshmi, the firebrand daughter of senior actor-producer-director Manchu Mohan Babu.
She said on Saturday that though the accused in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case had indulged in heinous crime, it was not proper to sentence them to death.
“After all, they are also human beings. They should be given an opportunity to reform themselves and realise their mistake. They should be taught how to respect a woman and the value of women in the society,” Manchu Lakshmi said, indicating that their hanging would not bring down the crime rate in the society.
Well, there are many people in the country who would agree with Lakshmi, but once the court gives the judgement, one has to abide by it.
One does not remember how she had reacted when Nirbhaya was raped on the dreadful night, but everybody felt the accused should be given instant punishment. And Manchu Lakshmi better avoid such comments on sensitive issues like Nirbhaya case.
Interestingly, Lakshmi also announced that she would not enter politics.
“I have decided against joining politics. I will confine myself to social service activities,” she said.
