No Trust Motions: Did Jagan Achieve His Objective?

The no-confidence motions moved by YSR Congress party against the Telugu Desam Party government in Andhra Pradesh and Assembly Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao might have been lost expectedly, but the question is whether Leader of Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy has achieved his objective.

Though pro-TDP media, particularly Andhra Jyothy and a few television channels, sought to project it as a failure of Jagan and tried to create the impression that he had made a self-goal by falling into the trap of the TDP on corrupt deeds, independent political observers have expressed view that Jagan has, indeed, succeeded in exposing the nefarious dealings of the Chandrababu Naidu government with regard to Polavaram, solar power projects, Krishnapatnam and illegal land purchases in and around Amaravati.

The biggest achievement of Jagan was that he had virtually waged a lone battle against the mighty Naidu government.

While Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu fielded his battery of senior legislators and minsters to launch a counter-attack and he, himself, put up a very aggressive posture, Jagan was a lone fighter on the other side with little cooperation from his party MLAs.

In fact, some of the YSR Congress party MLAs remained mute spectators when ministers like Achen Naidu were using harsh words against Jagan. Apparently, those MLAs were waiting for an opportunity to change their coats.

“He might not have succeeded in forcing a division of vote in the Assembly, but he emerged as triumphant in the battle. He did not even yield to the pressures from the ruling party to tender an apology for making wild allegations against the government. The debate on no-confidence motion has definitely raised the image of Jagan several times,” an analyst asserted.
