Just two days are left for the commencement of the first session of the Telangana assembly, Telangana Rashtra Samithi president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is still undecided on the appointment of the Speaker.
Reason: No TRS MLAs is interested in taking up the post, as the post is said to be jinxed. Anybody who is appointed as the Speaker will have to face the defeat in the immediate next election.
Though KCR has some names in his mind, but they are not happy with the offer as they fear that their political career would be doomed.
Some of them even approached KCR’s son and TRS working president K T Rama Rao and requested him not to consider their names for the post, even it would mean they would not be considered for the cabinet posts.
Senior TRS leader S Madhusudhana Chary, who held the post of Speaker in the first Telangana state assembly, faced humiliating defeat in the December 7 assembly elections from Bhupalpally constituency.
His defeat confirmed the sentiment that whoever becomes the Speaker will lose the subsequent assembly elections.
It started with senior Congress leader Agarala Eshwar Reddy, who served as the Speaker earlier, faced the defeat in the hands of Telugu Desam Party founder N T Rama Rao in Tirupati.
Subsequent Speakers including G Narayana Rao, P Ramachandra Reddy, Duddilla Sripada Rao, Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, K Pratibha Bharati, K R Suresh Reddy, N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Nadendla Manohar also could not win their immediate next elections.
The actual reason is that if one becomes the Speaker, he would lose connect with the people after occupying such a high position.
He cannot take part in party activities or mingle with the people of his constituency like other MLAs do and that is why he gets defeated!
In any case, there is a report that KCR has finalised the name of former minister Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy for the Speaker post.
It remains to be seen whether he would agree for the post or not.
