Stage is set for a major reshuffle within the Telugu Desam Party, as party president and chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu began the exercise to revamp the party ahead of upcoming Mahanadu in May.
According to party sources, Naidu is contemplating major changes in key positions, with long-serving leaders being replaced by new faces.
The restructuring exercise is being carried out without exceptions, ensuring a complete overhaul of leadership roles.
Sources said Naidu is expected to revamp the party politburo with fresh faces along with national and state committees for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Since many senior leaders have held positions multiple times, the party is considering a shift in strategy to provide opportunities to committed grassroots workers.
The proposed changes include a mix of senior leaders and younger members in the politburo and national committee.
Leaders who have held positions for three consecutive terms are likely to be replaced, as per the suggestions of Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh.
Sources said Lokesh and K Ram Mohan Naidu, who currently serve as general secretaries in the national executive, are expected to step down. Their positions are likely to be given to new leaders.
Speculation is rife that Lokesh is being prepared to take over as Working President of the party. His father-in-law and politburo member Nandamuri Balakrishna is likely to be appointed as General Secretary.
The new national committee is expected to focus on youth representation while ensuring regional and social balance. The politburo is expected to approve the changes before the upcoming budget session, sources said.
