If the efforts of Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs M Venkaiah Naidu succeed, both the Telugu States would get an increased number of MLAs in their Assemblies by 2009 elections following delimitation of the existing Assembly constituencies.
Naidu is seriously pursuing with the Union Home Ministry and Law Ministry in getting an appropriate bill amending the AP Reorganisation Act on delimitation of the Assembly constituencies.
The draft bill from the Home Ministry has already reached the Law Ministry to this effect. Once the draft bill gets ready, it would be endorsed by the Union Cabinet.
In all probability, the bill will be introduced in Parliament when it reassembles on April 25 and passed by the end of the session in May. Later, it will be communicated to the Election Commission of India for taking up delimitation.
Going by the draft bill, the Telangana State Assembly will get at least 34 more Assembly seats at the rate of two Assembly segments for each Lok Sabha constituency. Similarly, Andhra Pradesh Assembly will get 50 more MLA seats, which takes the total number of MLAs to 225.
Well, what is the use of this increased number of MLAs in the Telugu States? It will help political parties sell more tickets and collect more money from ticket aspirants. More number of MLAs will get more opportunities to make money.
For the common people, it is not going to make much difference, as they would get nothing more from the government, as their MLAs would only indulge in futile discussions in the Assemblies. So, what’s the use?
