Notwithstanding the ruckus created by the Congress, the YSR Congress party and even the Telugu Desam Party members in Parliament, the NDA government is unlikely to take a decision on special category status to Andhra Pradesh immediately.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had interacted with Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his party MPs in Delhi, did not give any concrete assurance.
“I have understood your problem. I will do something to help your state,” was all Modi had reportedly told them.
Union minister Sujana Chowadary was diplomatic in his talk with media saying that the Prime Minister was going through the demand and interacting with officials of Niti Ayog and other departments and might come up with a solution within a week.
However, TDP MP from Anantapur J C Diwakar Reddy, who is more outspoken of all the MPs, said they could not read the mind of the Prime Minister.
“He listened to our views patiently, but did not give us any concrete assurance. But from his little talk, we could understand that he was planning something for the state. We don’t know whether it is special status or special package,” he said.
Naidu, as usual, was evading an answer. He only said he had explained to Modi the issue and told him that the people would not accept anything less than special category status. The chief minister, however, did not say what Modi had told him.
