The Vijayawada police on Tuesday registered case against former Congress MLA Malladi Vishnu and eight of his partners and relatives in connection with the death of five people after they consumed spurious liquor at Krishnalanka bar, said to be owned by him.
Malladi Vishnu was made ninth accused (A-9) in the FIR filed by police on Tuesday.
The victims purchased liquor at Swarna Bar and Restaurant and consumed it on Sunday. One person died at the wine shop itself and four others died at the hospital on Monday. More than 10 people were undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, the excise officials ordered for closure of wine shops and bar and restaurants in Vijayawada and across Krishna district in the wake of this incident.
Excise officials are collecting samples of Officer’s Choice liquor bottles as the victims have consumed the same brand on the fateful day.
Excise Commissioner M K Meena directed officials to conduct inspections of all wine shops and bars to check sale of adulterated liquor.
However, Malladi Vishnu denied owning the bar and said it was owned by his relatives.
