Lagadapati Predicts Doom For Congress

The Congress party has lost his ground in Seemandhra by taking the decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh, the Vijayawada Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal said.

He said that he was in total agreement with another senior Congress leader J C Diwakar Reddy's remark that the ruling party would face total rout in Seemandhra following division of the state.

He predicted doom for the Congress unless it reverses its decision to split the state.

Considered the staunchest supporter of the cause of united Andhra Pradesh, Lagadapati, however, expressed the hope that the 2014 elections would be held in the integrated state and the celebrations of the state formation day would be held again next year as well.

Rejecting the idea of an all-party meeting on Telangana, he said that the Centre should honour the sentiments of the majority people.

"The all-party meet will not serve any purpose. the Union Government should listen to the voices of the people. How can it go against the will of the crores of Telugu people?" the MP said.

While other Congress leaders have welcomed convening of the all-party meeting, the flamboyant MP from Vijayawada has opposed it on the ground that the people's aspirations are more important that the opinions of the political parties.

There are reports suggesting that Lagadapati might eventually quit Congress over the bifurcation issue.

An industrialist turned politician, Lagadapati has tried all methods to convince the party high command to reverse its decision to divide the state but to no avail.

He had even petitioned to the Delhi High Court, seeking a direction to the Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to accept his resignation from the Lok Sabha. However, he was forced to withdraw the petition.
