If the speculations doing rounds in the Telangana Rashtra Samithi circles are to be believed, party president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter Kalvakuntla Kavitha is most likely to be nominated to Rajya Sabha shortly.
Kavitha, who was defeated by BJP candidate Dharmapuri Arvindi Nizamabad in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, was elected to the legislative council only February this year, following the disqualification of sitting MLC Bhupathi Reddy, who defected to the Congress.
Her term will come to an end on January 4 and the EC has already announced the schedule for the elections to her seat and the nomination process began on Tuesday. The elections are scheduled to be held on December 10.
According to sources, Kavitha is not interested in the MLC seat, though it is going to be a cakewalk for her win from Nizamabad local bodies’ constituency because of the huge majority the TRS has in the local bodies.
Instead, she reportedly requested her father KCR to nominate her to Rajya Sabha. Apparently, she realised that she might not be inducted into the state cabinet and she doesn’t want to remain just as an MLC.
That is precisely the reason why KCR has withdrawn Rajya Sabha member Banda Prakash and chose him as the party candidate for the MLC seat. Banda Prakash still has three years to complete his term. So, in his place, Kavitha will be sent to the Upper House.
Alternatively, there are two more Rajya Sabha vacancies going to arise in April – that of Dharmapuri Srinivas and Capt V Lakshmikantha Rao. The election process to these two seats will begin in February itself.
So, Kavitha might be nominated in one of these two vacancies, if she is not interested in the three-year term. Maybe, she thought it would be safer for her to keep away from petty politics back home!
