There was widespread criticism over YS Jagan Mohan Reddy demanding a compensation of Rs 1 crore for next of kin of the victims of the GAIL tragedy in Konaseema, with many terming his demand as exorbitant.
Why is it exorbitant and how can Jagan be accused of trying to politicize a horrifying tragedy?
The tragedy occurred only because of the negligence of GAIL and as Jagan has rightly pointed out, there were similar incidents in the past which were not given due concern by the management of GAIL as there were no casualties.
Nineteen innocent, poor people have lost their lives in the tragedy and the families of the victims are looking for justice, not money! But in asking for a compensation of Rs 1 crore which is peanuts to a super cash-rich organization like GAIL, what Jagan hopes to underscore is that such companies would think twice in future about the safety of their projects if not for the safety of the people in the vicinity, then at least for the compensation they would have to shell out.
That is the primary motive behind the claim of YS Jagan which is thoroughly justified for all said and done, would anybody in their right minds agree to a similar death of their loved ones even if they were to get Rs 100 crore as compensation?
