Is YSRCP The Sole Opposition Party?

Going by the nature of debate on draft Telangana bill in the Assembly, it appears that there is only one opposition party in the state and that is YSR Congress Party.

Both the ruling Congress and the main opposition Telugu Desam Party were found making similar arguments inside and outside the Assembly on the debate on AP Reorganisation Bill, 2013.

The Seemandhra members of the TDP frequently interrupted the YSRCP floor leader YS Vijayamma when she was speaking in the House, demanding that a resolution be passed in favour of keeping the state united.

The Finance Minister Anam Ramanarayan Reddy and TDP’s Payyavula Kesav wanted a debate in the House on the draft bill so that members can express their views.

While Vijayamma demanded that voting on the Bill should take place before it is introduced in the Assembly.

The Speaker Nadendla Manohar allowed Vijayamma to speak after the house resumed 11 a.m. She said it was the misfortune of the state that a bill on bifurcation was being introduced in the Assembly.

Any discussion on the bill would tantamount to accepting the division of the state, she argued.

She reiterated that her party stood for Samaikyadhra. She slammed the Congress and said that the latter was bifurcating the state to suit its interests and not the peoples.

"The Congress is misusing Article 3 and is adopting unconstitutional methods to divide the state," she said.
