The much-awaited notification for GHMC elections is expected to be issued in a day or two. The polling is likely to be held on January 23.

While the Telangana government had earlier planned to hold election on January 17, it went back after criticism from various quarters over holding elections a day after Sankranthi.
Political parties pointed out that Seemandhra voters who constitute a major chunk of voters in GHMC limits go to their native places to celebrate Sankranthi and it would be difficult for them to come back to Hyderabad in a day after Sankranthi.
Parties alleged that TRS planned elections during Sankranthi to avoid Seemandhra voters, fearing that they may vote against TRS.
Following this, the government decided to give one-week gap after Sankranthi for polling.
