Fringe Tamil Outfit Targets Sobhan Babu's Statue

CHENNAI: Cadre and the leader of a fringe pro-Tamil outfit were arrested by the city police on Monday after they attempted to proceed on a rally to remove the statue of yesteryear Telugu star Sobhan Babu in retaliation to the removal of the statue of slain LTTE leader Prabakaran at Nagapattinam.

The TMP members were trying to retaliate the removal of statue of slain LTTE leader Prabkaran by police from a private temple premises in Nagapattinam district recently.

The fringe outfit Tamizhar Munnetra Padai, which has incorporated the picture of Vellupillai Prabhakaran in its name board, passed a resolution condemning the police for removing the statue of Prabhakran, besides resolving to take down Sobhan Babu's statue installed in Mehta Nagar in the City.

The TMP members claimed that there was no need for the statue of Shoban Babu in Chennai as there was no significant contribution to Tamil Nadu from him.

The outfit members led by Veeralakshmi attempted to take out a rally from Nazarethpet near Poonamallee on Monday morning. The Nazarethpet Police after their talks with them failed, arrested and detained them in a community hall. They were later released.

The actor, born in Nandigama in Andhra Pradesh on January 14, 1937, died here on March 20, 2008. He had donned the lead role in over 200 films in Tollywood.
