Fact Sheet: It's Payback Time!

Fact Sheet: It's Payback Time!

There's a time and place for everything in politics! After having made so many derogatory statements against Narendra Modi during the election campaign, did KCR really expect to get away Scott-free?

The BJP has now dug up a decade old case against KCR and the consequences promise to be interesting. Here are the details:

In 2006, a tender for civil works in ESI Hospitals, amounting to Rs 19 crore was awarded to National Buildings Construction Corporation Ltd (NBCC), a government body.

KCR was then Union Minister of Labour, Employment and Training. His secretary immediately wrote a letter to ESI Hospitals asking that the contract be awarded to a person called Satyanarayana, an engineer with the Fisheries Department despite knowing fully well that only NBCC is mandated to carry out such works. ESI was forced to oblige.

IIT Chennai was approached to conduct a survey of the work done after AP fisheries carried out the maintenance in three hospitals of ESI in Hyderabad, Vizag and Vijayawada.

IIT Chennai and an internal probe by Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) of India in 2007-2008 found that the work was of substandard quality and failed to satisfy the terms of the Rs 19-crore contract.

The whole work in three hospitals had to be again given again to another company after IIT Chennai found major problems with the work. This led to extra burden on the budgets of ESIC, leading to loss of Rs 6 crore to exchequer.

The CBI had filed a case and yesterday grilled KCR for one hour on how he gave his approval for the contract to be awarded to Satyanarayana.

With the media pre-occupied with Amaravathi, the issue has not got much attention. But once the ‘Amaravathi’ drama is over, KCR had better get ready for some serious trouble.
