![Can Jagan Succeed With Outdated Promise?](https://www.greatandhra.com/newphotos9/ga_politics1611037702.jpeg)
It looks like YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy is desperate to win over the confidence of electorate by taking up several issues, but one wonders whether he is running out of ideas, as most of the promises he is making are considered to be outdated.
Take for example, the promise made by Jagan that he would implement total prohibition in the State if his party is voted to power in the next elections.
This promise is definitely outdated and far from convincing the electorate, as it has already been tested in the past and turned out to be a miserable flop.
In 1994 elections, the people were carried away by the total prohibition promise made by then Telugu Desam Party president N T Rama Rao and voted him to power.
It was the follow-up of a mass movement taken up at Doobagunta in Nellore district which later spread to entire Andhra Pradesh. However, when it was implemented, it turned out to be a flop, as it only led to smuggling of spurious liquor.
Now, boozing has become a habit in the society and in the last 21 years, the people have become clever enough to realise that prohibition cannot be implemented in the State.
“It is an outdated promise now. It is like political parties promising to weed out corruption in the society completely. Just like people do not believe in the promise of eradication of corruption, they don’t believe if somebody promises total prohibition. It is better Jagan makes promises that are practical in implementation,” an analyst said.
It may be mentioned that the people have stopped believing in the promise of securing special category status to AP. They know that the Centre would not give it under any circumstances, though Jagan is still harping on the same promise.
