The acceptance of resignations of five YSR Congress party MPs at last by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Thursday evening has laid the ground for a fresh battle in Andhra Pradesh.
Though the Telugu Desam Party leaders are dubbing it as a high drama as it is unlikely that the Election Commission will hold by-elections to the vacant seats, the YSRC is pretty confident that the acceptance of resignations will fetch a tremendous mileage to the party in the next elections.
The resigned MPs will have a meeting with party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy in a day or two to work out their future course of action on how to take advantage of their resignations. They have a valid argument to claim that their resignations were genuine.
“The TDP leaders should remember that we have resigned from our MP seats 14 months before our term ends. As far as we are concerned, we have ceased to be MPs from April 6 itself.
Acceptance or rejection of our resignation letters is not in our hands and the Speaker took her own time in accepting them.
And it is for the Election Commission to decide whether to conduct the by-elections or not. It is not our fault,” former Ongole MP Y V Subba Reddy said.
If the TDP thought the Centre would not accept the resignations of the five MPs, then its MPs also should have resigned since they would have nothing to lose.
“Had the ruling Telugu Desam Party MPs too resigned, the situation would have been different. It would have shaken the country and NDA government could have considered granting of special category status to AP,” the YSRC leader said.
He alleged Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu struck a compromise settlement for a special economic package rather than special category status.
The resigned YSRC MPs are now planning to go into the people explaining their sacrifice for the sake of special category status.
