'Boothu' Word In Telangana Assembly!

Using certain catch words that sound vulgar is very common in different parts of Telangana, as such words have become part of the Telangana dialect. However, when it comes to the august bodies like State Legislature, they are definitely unparliamentary.

Take for example, the phrase “Nee Avva…” It is a very commonly used word in the Telangana districts though it has an inherent vulgar meaning. But nobody takes it as an offensive. Perhaps that was the reason why Power Minister Jagadish Reddy inadvertently used the phrase in the Assembly on Tuesday.

Jagadish Reddy got irritated over the interruptions of the Congress members while he was speaking during the question hour. He used the word “Nee Avva..” while pointing out at CLP leader K Jana Reddy. This triggered arguments between the ruling party and Congress members.

The Congress members continued their protest near the podium and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao intervened and said that though he was not present during the heated arguments, he had heard the comment of the Minister on the TV.

“I was taken aback by the Minister’s reaction as all the members including the TRS members, especially the ministers, should observe restraint and remain cool despite provocations from the opposition benches. It is the bounded duty of everyone to maintain decency, dignity and decorum in the august House and to uphold this I had even asked my cabinet colleague to withdraw his remarks and express regrets,” he explained.

Jagadish Reddy had no option but to apologise. “I did not intend to hurt the feelings of any member or use any language not befitting to the dignity and decorum of the House,” he explained.

The minister’s regrets were welcomed and hailed by the TRS members with thumping of desks.
