Bifurcation: Who Will Have Last Laugh?

The dramatic developments in the State Assembly on Thursday have led to a confusing situation as to whether the Telangana bill was sent back to the Centre after completion of discussions or rejected by the Assembly.

Both Seemandhra and Telangana leaders claimed victory for Samaikyandhra and Telangana respectively.

While the Seemandhra leaders said the Parliament cannot take up the bill at any cost as it was rejected by the Assembly through voice vote, the Telangana protagonists said the passage of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s resolution rejecting the bill has no significance, after the Speaker announced earlier that the House had completed discussion on the bill, which would be returned to Parliament along with the opinions of the members.

AICC general secretary in charge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh Digvijay Singh also claimed that the Telangana bill crossed yet another milestone and it was not rejected by the Assembly.

“There was voting in the Assembly on the bill. Only on the resolution moved by Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy was passed. So, the Assembly had fulfilled a Constitutional obligation by debating the Bill. The resolution of the CM and adoption of the same would not have any impact on the formation of Telangana State,” he reiterated.
