Behind The Scene: Will That Help?

DGP Ramudu says that it will take some time for the entire AP Police to shift from Hyderabad.

Land is needed to be acquired in AP for the Greyhounds Training, Police Academy and other ancillary units.

The Centre will also be providing financial assistance as per the provisions of the AP reorganization Bill. Also, it is not possible to replicate the facilities and infrastructure of Hyderabad overnight in AP said the DGP.

Interestingly, the DGP said that in order to make the police stations more public friendly, the department was considering the appointment of receptionists.

Now we normally assume receptionists to be female and people who come to police stations could very well do with a sympathetic tone of voice.

However, we have often come across receptionists in daily life whose behavior makes us feel like strangling them.

And considering the nature of work that goes on in police stations and the usually tense atmosphere in there, it is doubtful whether these receptionists can stand the strain for long.

They might well become privy to some conversations that could embarrass the cops themselves. Anyone coming to a police station would definitely find someone to talk to, normally the ‘writer’.

So, why cannot the existing personnel themselves be given training in soft skills initially during their training itself?

Picture this scenario: A couple walks into a police station a find the receptionist seated at her desk.

Receptionist: Good morning. Welcome! How may I help you?

Couple: Our son has been picked up by the police a few days back in a robbery case. These are his details. He has not come back home yet. (Screams coming from inside)

Receptionist: Yes, right! As you can hear, your son is currently the subject of a third degree interrogation which should be over in another fifteen minutes.

In the meantime, is there anything I can get you? A glass of water or a cup of coffee maybe? No? Fine! Please make yourself at home and thank you for visiting us.
