Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is likely to be elected the chairperson of the Congress parliamentary party on Saturday when its 44 new Lok Sabha MPs and existing Rajya Sabha MPs meet in the Central Hall of Parliament.
According to sources, the meeting is expected to authorise Sonia to appoint the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, who will take on the government.
While some party leaders want either Sonia or vice- president Rahul Gandhi to take on that role, others have suggested the names of senior leaders like Kamal Nath and M. Veerappa Moily.
In the Rajya Sabha, the leader of the Opposition will be decided only after consultations with outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, as he is a member of the upper house. If Singh declines, the names of veterans like Ghulam Nabi Azad and Digvijaya Singh may be considered.
