Assembly BAC Vertically Divided

Bitter differences cropped up among the members of the Assembly Business Advisory Committee (BAC) which met here on Tuesday to decide the schedule for debate in the House on the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill, 2013.

Finally, it was decided to conduct the debate for three days from Wednesday. If the debate remains inconclusive on December 20, the last day of the current session as per original schedule, then the BAC would meet again on Friday to take a decision on whether to extend the session or to reconvene it in the first week of January.

The BAC meeting was held against the backdrop of deep regional divide among the members and the political parties over Telangana issue.

The YSR Congress Party members walked out of the meeting after their request for introducing a resolution in the House in favour of keeping the state united was rejected outright by the government.

The Telugu Desam Party was divided over the bifurcation issue as its Seemandhra representative Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu also walked out of the meeting, demanding that the state be kept united while its Telangana representative Motkupalli Narasimulu participated in the meeting till the end and wanted immediate and uninterrupted debate on the Telangana bill in the House.

Earlier, the Finance Minister Anam Ramanarayan Reddy wanted the House to be adjourned tomorrow and re-assembled on January 2 to take up debate on the bill.

The proposal was strongly opposed by Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha and Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu. The Chief Minister said that every member should be given an opportunity to speak on the bill and suggest amendments.
