The YSR Congress party took a dig at megastar Chiranjeevi for allegedly exposing his gender bias by stating that he desperately wanted his son Ram Charan to have a boy as his next child.
Speaking to reporters, YSRCP official spokesperson and popular anchor Shyamala wondered how Chiranjeevi could indulge in such sexist comments.
“It was not proper on the part of the megastar to say that he wanted Ram Charan to have a son to carry the legacy of his family,” she said.
She wondered how Chiranjeevi is of the view that only a son would carry the family legacy, not the daughter.
“I don’t know with what intention he made such a comment, but he should come out of such backward thinking that only sons would be the successors of a family,” she said.
Shyamala said at a time when women were achieving tremendous progress in all fields and taking the society forward, it was not proper on the part of a senior actor like Chiranjeevi to make such statements that only sons would carry the legacy of the family.
She pointed out that Chiranjeevi’s daughter-in-law Upasana Kamineni, is a highly entrepreneurial woman and dynamic lady.
“She is playing a key role in the Apollo Hospitals group and has been running the business in the most successful manner,” she said.
The YSRCP spokesperson said apart from Upasana, her sisters and mother had grown into powerful ladies.
“Legacy can be carried by any successor – whether it is daughter or son. There is no need to have a son compulsorily,” she said.
She said it was unfortunate that some comments have come from Chiranjeevi, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, who can influence millions of people, at a time when everybody has been campaigning to promote gender equality.
